Ringfeder friction springs are an essential part of the future design systems for protecting seismic structures and electricity transmission systems, e.g., high voltage switches (wall bushings). It is a sort of "safety pillow,", especially in active seismic zones like Japan, China, Indonesia, Italy, the Caucasus region, Western Americas (Cordillier mountains and Andes), etc. It is impossible not to build seismically high-risk structures in those areas, so the solution is to use all the available technology and take every safety precaution possible. Of course, not all damage can be avoided during an earthquake, but Ringfeder friction springs provide maximum protection for buildings.
Advantages of Friction Springs
Long Life
Friction Springs are designed to last through many cycles and are reusable. If one of the rings in a Friction Spring assembly breaks, the spring will still work but lose a little stroke and become slightly stiffer. The end force and the dampening remain unaffected. If a coil spring or a washer breaks, there will be a total failure, and you will have no protection anymore.
Dampening
Using an F-S1 grease, friction springs dampen 2/3 of the introduced energy. If you need less damping, a customized solution could be tailored to reduce damping of about 1/3 of the oriented energy. This is a simple solution that can change the properties of the friction spring. In specific seismic designs, it may be required for the friction spring to have a higher force as the spring is unloaded to help push the building structure back to its vertical position.
Fire and High Temperature
Friction springs are made out of special spring steel and coated with grease. Rubber products will be destroyed in case of a fire, but the friction springs will endure the fire. You would need to re-apply oil to the springs.
Return Force
To determine the spring's best spring return force for your specific design, you should discuss your application with professionals. This is not possible with other, e.g., conventional spring types. The grease can be changed, the outside diameter increased, or the taper angle altered to achieve your desired results.
Re-Usability
Friction springs can be re-used after a seismic event. They are designed to withstand many cycles and remain stable. Friction springs are maintenance-free.
Speed
Friction springs react faster to applied forces than any other spring type.
Space
Friction springs give you the highest forces at a given diameter.
