Heat - the enemy of the wind. A bit poetic but true. Wind energy is considered one of two types of 100% clean and renewable energy sources, and wind farms became a regular thing a long time ago. Wind turbines are thought of as these huge fans that give energy, so all you have to do is plop as many as possible and forget about them. Easy, right? Wrong.
There's a lot more to wind turbines than meets the eye. For example, wind turbines tend to overheat and consequently fail if no cooling system is installed or if the one installed fails itself. As the global temperature keeps rising and we see new heat records being set every year, the cooling system for a wind turbine has become an even more critical component than it ever was.


A hydraulic cooling unit intended for wind turbines consists of a motor pump, immersion heater, thermostatic mixing valve, pressure transmitters, pre-wired junction box, air-excluding valves, expansion vessel, and temperature sensors. As was mentioned before, wind turbines become less effective if they heat up during operation. All the gearboxes, converters, power packs, and generators should have the right temperature to provide the best performance for your wind turbine. The Svendborg Cooling System specifications include:

  • Coolant flow rate: 650 L/min

  • Coolant medium: Water/glycol mixture

  • Cooling capacity: 248 kW

  • Expected lifespan: 20 years

  • Design temperature: -20 to + 50°C

 

Wind Turbines

Free-standing Svendborg Brakes cooling system combines a pump, valve, motor manifold, converter, and heat exchanger installed on the top of the nacelle and pumps coolant through the generator. It delivers outstanding performance while minimizing maintenance and complexity. The usage of a valve manifold obviously reduces the risk of oil leakage.
