Stromag, founded in 1932 in Dortmund, Germany, started as a manufacturer of conductor rails and electric crane material. About Stromag
One of Stromag's early breakthroughs was the development and production of multi-disc clutches in 1938, which paved the way for the company's future success in the field of power transmission components. In 1939, the Periflex couplings were introduced, which were quickly adopted by the market and became a cornerstone of Stromag's product line.
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Stromag expanded its operations globally, setting up subsidiaries across Europe and overseas. It also established its expertise in new technologies, such as hydrostatically bearing-supported oil conducts for hydraulic multi-disc clutches.
In the 1970s, Stromag engineers developed highly flexible rubber elements for the (GE) coupling on internal combustion engines. The company also made strides in digital servo drive systems with VeCon control electronics, which eventually superseded electromagnetically controlled friction processes on clutches and brakes.
In the 1990s, Stromag began expanding its presence in Asia, reflecting the growing importance of the region in the global economy. In 2000, it designed, manufactured, and delivered the largest hydraulic marine clutches ever built, which could deliver torques up to 2.2m newton meters. The company also took over SIME, the French world market leader for industrial disc brakes, in December of that year.
In 2007, the Stromag Group was taken over by the investment company Equita. The following years saw the foundation and expansion of new Stromag subsidiaries in India, China, and Korea, as well as the integration of the Sinter business unit from Sundwiger Messingwerk GmbH & Co KG.
In 2016, Altra Industrial Motion Corp. acquired Stromag, cementing the company's position as a global leader in the development and production of clutches, brakes, and power transmission components. On March 27, electric motors manufacturer Regal Rexnord Corporation announced it had completed its $5 billion acquisition of Altra Industrial Motion Corp, including Stromag.
