Servo Gear Reducers

Servo Gear Reducers

Servo gear reducers are maximum precision and dynamic products combined with exceptional torque density and low torsional backlash, which are used in mechanical and mechatronic drives. These servo gearboxes develop complete, single-supplier solutions for driving any axis. They are found in the most diverse industries and applications due to their torque, speed, torsional backlash, rigidity, and ratio.

A gear reducer is a mechanical transmission device that reduces the output rotational speed of the motor and increases the torque created by the motor. Multiplying the torque produced by the motor leads to increased serviceable power to the machine connected. Gear reducers are used to improve the efficiency of any operation.

What is a Servo Gear Reducer

The term servo was first used by Joseph Facort in 1859 when he controlled the rudders on a ship using steam. A Servo motor is an electric motor that rotates parts of a machine with high efficiency and exceptional precision. A servo motor couples a regular motor with a sensor for positional interpretation that allows it to control the linear or rotational speed and position.

A servo gear reducer, also known as a servo gearbox or precision gear reducer, is a type of speed reducer that is used with a servo motor. Servo gear reducers are used in high-torque and low-speed applications. Servo gear reducers allow high acceleration and high torques because of their high torsional stiffness and low rotational clearance. Servo gear units are essential for applications that require high positioning accuracy, short cycle times, precise speeds, and high processing speeds.

Types of Servo Gear Reducers

Servo gear reducers are classified by the alignment of the input and output shafts. The two types of alignment are inline and right angle. Inline servo gear reducers are the most common type, while right-angle reducers are used when the configuration cannot be changed and space is limited. Right-angle gearboxes are less efficient and compact than inline reducers.

Inline Servo Speed Reducers

Inline servo speed reducers use planetary and helical gears. Planetary and helical gears offer highly efficient, high-torque, low-noise, and low-vibration movements. The servo planetary gearbox is used when the load moves with precise positioning. Planetary servo reducers are essential in automation equipment, such as aviation, satellite, medical, wafer equipment, military technology, and robots.

Right Angle Speed Redecuers

Right-angle speed reducers generally consist of bevel or worm gears. Bevel and worm gears offer high torque, low vibration, and low-noise capabilities. The worm servo motor reducer is the cheapest design for speed-reducing applications. However,  the efficiency gradually drops when the speed-decreasing ratio rises. Servo-Worm Reducers are designed for use in applications that demand precise positioning and repeatability. These reducers are suitable for material handling, automation, machine tool, and robotics applications.

While selecting a servo motor speed reducer, consider the following factors: high torque, horsepower, efficiency as the ratio changes, service factors, mounting space and location,  connecting elements, and device service life.

HVH Industrial offers a wide range of inline and right-angle servo speed reducers from Apex Dynamics, Wittenstein, Boston Gear, Nidec, GAM, Neugart, and Bonfiglioli.
