Features and Applications of Ringfeder Barrel Couplings

Ringfeder barrel couplings are used for crane and hoisting gear applications to connect the drive shaft of the gearbox with the rope drum. These are torsionally rigid, easy to assemble and maintain, and effectively compensate for axial and radial shaft misalignments. Barrel couplings offer friction-fit torque transmission with the help of hardened steel barrel rollers that fit into semi-circular, machined openings on the hub and sleeve, thus ensuring safe and reliable bearing of occurring bending loads and radial forces. Integrated inner and outer covers and lip seals prevent foreign objects from penetrating and lubricants from escaping.

Product Features
The barrel couplings consist of a sleeve made of reinforced material, equipped with semi-circular internal teeth, and a hub made of reinforced material with semi-circular external teeth of the same shape. As a result, steel barrel rollers are used for the circular recording, which serves as power transmission elements. The lock rings installed on both sides of the barrel rollers serve as their axial guidance. Each equipped with a lip seal, inner and outer covers effectively prevent foreign matter from entering and lubricant from escaping.
Due to the curved shape of the barrel rollers, it is possible to swing the hub relative to the housing. As a result, the angular alignment errors are likely to compensate for. Depending on the coupling size, axial displacements of 3 mm to 8 mm can be accommodated during the operation process. The torque is transmitted with the help of 2 carrier faces on the housing and their counter-carrier face into the drum. The screws are used to connect the drum to support the torque transmission.
Product Applications
These are used in material handling technology, particularly in the crane hoists, to connect rope drums to the gear output shaft with minimum axial space. The barrel coupling transmits high torques and large radial forces in this application and acts as a joint.
The product requires high alignment quality. However, unavoidable assembly inaccuracies, deflection of the foundation under load, and wear on the bearing cause enormous additional forces to be absorbed by the stored gear shaft. So additional stress can cause fatigue failure and damage to bearing and gear.
The barrel couplings are installed between the gearbox and rope drum to avoid such risks, making an angular misalignment. Considering that the coupling absorbs displacements and thus acts as a floating bearing, a spherical roller bearing is to be provided as a fixed bearing at the other end of the drum shaft.
