Twiflex Air-Start Clutch
The Air-Start Clutches (also known as Centrifugal Clutch) are suitable for the pump industry, such as in marine propulsion or wherever the load can drive back, as it is in centrifugal pumps. The clutch drum is joined to the prime mover, the hub carrying the flexibly mounted lined shoes forming the driven half coupling. The clutch shoes are moved outwards into pressure contact with the rotating drum air thrusters built into the driven half hub to provide an engagement.
That helps the driven half to rotate accelerating the centrifugal effect, which causes the clutch shoe assemblies to press harder against the drum. That process gives progressively firmer engagement until the starting air pressure can be removed after a few seconds.
As the clutch transmits a usual power with the help of centrifugal force, it operates without further slip. In case of overload or slow operation of the main engine, the clutch disengages immediately protecting the transmission from the high inertia torque. The Air-Start Clutch implements a function that the rotating masses of the engine, electric motor, or turbine rotor should apply.
