BD Series-Single Position Jaw Clutches

BD series clutches serve a crucial role in scenarios where specific sections of a machine require disconnection from the drive system and subsequent reconnection, all while preserving the original phase or angular relationship. They find frequent application in various settings, such as within a line-shaft system, in between printing units within an offset printing press, and for detaching specific units in a finishing line.

The mechanism consists of two sets of jaw assemblies, each affixed to separate shafts and supported by dual bearings. These assemblies are enclosed within robust cast iron housings. This construction design ensures a secure disengagement, preventing any locking in the disengaged state, even in the event of a failure. The engagement, set to a single position, is accomplished by having two teeth with slightly varying dimensions.

Moreover, this unit minimizes backlash and maximizes torsional rigidity by employing high-strength, case-hardened, ground chrome molybdenum alloy steel for the jaws and slide-dog shifting components. The clutch can be actuated remotely using a pneumatic cylinder and accompanying limit switches, which are provided as part of the unit. Alternatively, it can be engaged manually via a shifting lever. Ball bearings and Viton seals are incorporated to accommodate higher speeds and elevated temperatures.
