Micron was founded in 1952 and specialized in producing high-precision gears for the aerospace industry. In the early 1990s, Micron introduced the True Planetary gearheads and revolutionized motion control. In 1995, Micron was purchased by Thomson Linear, and later in 2018, the company joined Altra Motion and merged with Boston Gear.
What is a Planetary Gearhead
A servo motor often moves industrial production lines along with a gearing mechanism. The motor drives the whole system, while the gearhead serves as a connection between the motor and the application to transform the rotational speed and the torque.
In general, a gear head reduces the output rotational speed of the motor. It also increases the torque created by the motor, which leads to increased usable power for the machine connected. Gear heads are mainly used to improve the efficiency of any operation.
In addition to transforming speed and torque, Micron planetary gearheads have an extra feature that also controls the positioning accuracy of the drive via the backlash. Backlash indicates the possible torsional angle of the output drive while the input drive is simultaneously blocked. In other terms, backlash represents the air between two toothed flanges.
Gear heads with higher backlash cause positioning errors to occur during operations, and these errors mount up more and can lead to the stopping and failure of the operation.
The Micron TRUE Planetary Gearheads are designed for high-precision motion control applications that require high torque to volume ratio, high torsional stiffness, and low backlash.
True Planetary Gearhead Specifications:
-
High Torque-to-Size Ratio - allows compact design
-
Low backlash - eliminates positioning errors due to lost motion
-
Inertia Matching - keeps servo system stable and in control
-
High Rigidity - optimizes system response
-
Self Relubrication - eliminates costly maintenance and downtime
-
High Radial Load Capacity - mount pulleys and pinions directly on the output shaft
-
RediMount - The unique RediMount system will mount any Micron Gearhead to any motor in three simple steps in less than five minutes and is error-free.
-
Superior Technology - All micron gears are case-hardened to HRC60 for longer life.
-
The UltraTRUE and ValueTRUE models have a higher helix angle than competitors' helical gearheads, resulting in less backlash, smoother and quieter operation, and longer life.
Micron offers both inline and right-angle planetary gearheads. In right-angle planetary gearheads, the input and output shafts meet at a 90° angle, while in inline gearheads, the input and output shafts are aligned along the same centerline.
The Micron In-Line Planetary Gearheads include the AquaTRUE, DuraTRUE, EverTRUE, NemaTRUE, UltraTRUE, and XTRUE.
The Micron Right Angle Planetary Gearheads consist of the NemaTRUE 90, DuraTRUE 90, DuraTRUE 90 Dual Shaft, DuraTRUE 90 Hollow Shaft, ValueTrue 90, and UltraTRUE 90.
Micron has the world's largest selection of planetary gearheads, with over 1500 size and ratio combinations that offer a solution for almost any application.
